The 10 tips to make your flowers last longer
Simple, quick and proven. If you only do three, make them the cut, clean water and a cool spot:
- Cut the stems at an angle: trim 2-3 cm on the diagonal with clean scissors before placing the flowers in water, and repeat every 2-3 days. You increase the surface for absorption and stop the stem from sealing.
- Use a really clean vase: wash it with hot water and a little soap before every bouquet. Bacteria from a dirty vase are the number-one reason the water turns foul.
- Fill with fresh water: most flowers prefer room-temperature water; bulb flowers such as tulips do better with a little cold water.
- Add the flower food: that sachet that comes with the bouquet feeds the flower and slows bacteria. No sachet? Use the homemade trick in tip 9.
- Remove leaves below the water: any submerged leaf rots, fouls the water and speeds up wilting. Keep only clean stem inside the vase.
- Change the water every 2 days: and take the chance to re-trim the stems and rinse the vase. Clean water means more days of life.
- Keep them in a cool spot: away from direct sun, radiators, the TV and draughts. Heat is the number-one enemy of cut flowers.
- Keep them away from fruit: ripe fruit releases ethylene, a gas that ages and wilts flowers very fast. No fruit bowl next to the vase.
- Homemade trick with no flower food: one teaspoon of sugar (food) plus a few drops of bleach or a splash of vinegar or lemon (antibacterial) per litre of water.
- Remove spent blooms in time: as soon as a flower fades, take it out of the bouquet. You stop it releasing ethylene and “infecting” the rest, and the arrangement looks fresh for longer.
Mistakes that wilt flowers too soon
Most bouquets don't die of old age, they die of these slips:
- Leaving the vase in the sun or on top of an appliance that gives off heat.
- Not changing the water until it smells bad.
- Cutting stems straight, or with dirty scissors that crush the stem.
- Keeping the bouquet right next to the fruit bowl.
- Skipping the flower-food sachet “because it's just an extra”.
What the sachet of flower food is for
That little sachet we give you with the bouquet isn't filler: it does three things at once. It contains sugar, which feeds the flower; an acidifier, which lowers the water's pH so the stem drinks better; and a mild biocide, which holds back bacteria. That's why a bouquet with flower food lasts several days longer than the same bouquet in plain water.
Out of sachets? The homemade trick (sugar + a few drops of bleach or vinegar) mimics the effect, though the professional sachet is always more effective. Ask us for extra sachets when you pick up your bouquet — they're free.
Care by flower type
Not every flower wants the same thing. These are the nuances that make the difference:
- Hydrangeas: they drink mostly through the bloom. If they wilt, submerge the whole head in cold water for 30-60 minutes and they revive. We explain it in our hydrangea guide.
- Tulips: they keep growing in the vase and lean toward the light. Little water, cold, and a tall vase to hold them. More in our tulip guide.
- Roses: if they droop at the neck, re-cut the stem under water and leave them submerged a while to rehydrate. See our rose bouquets.
- Orchids (plant): water by immersion once a week and never waterlog. We cover it in our orchid guide.

Frequently asked questions
How long do cut flowers last in a vase?
Between 5 and 12 days depending on the flower and the care. Carnations and chrysanthemums last longer; fully open flowers, less. The cut, clean water and a cool spot make the difference.
What is the sachet of flower food for?
It contains sugar that feeds the flower, an acidifier that improves water uptake and a biocide that slows bacteria. It adds several days of life compared with plain water.
Do aspirin, sugar or bleach in the water work?
Sugar feeds and a few drops of bleach or vinegar slow bacteria, so they help. Aspirin barely makes a difference. Professional flower food is still the most effective.
Why do my flowers wilt so fast?
Almost always for three reasons: heat (sun or radiators), dirty water that isn't changed, or keeping the bouquet near fruit. Check those three and you'll notice the difference.
How often should I change the vase water?
Every 2 days. Take the chance to re-trim the stems at an angle and rinse the vase before refilling with fresh water.
Do you deliver fresh flowers in Mallorca?
Yes. We deliver bouquets and arrangements with flowers fresh that day across Palma and the whole island, with a sachet of flower food so they last as long as possible.
