Hydrangea guide: meaning, bouquets, combinations and care

Few flowers say so much with so little as the hydrangea. Its big round heads, its volume and its range of colours —from deep blue to powdery pink or the purest white— make it one of the favourites for bouquets, centrepieces and weddings. And in Mallorca, with its light and climate, it looks especially good.

In this guide we explain what hydrangeas mean by colour, how to combine them in a bouquet, the florist's trick to revive them when they wilt and why they're one of the queens of weddings. All with the practical eye of a local florist who works with hydrangeas every week.

The meaning of hydrangeas by colour

In the language of flowers, the hydrangea is associated with gratitude, abundance and sincere feelings. But each colour adds a nuance worth knowing before giving them:

  • Blue hydrangea: trust, harmony and serenity. An elegant, Mediterranean classic.
  • Pink hydrangea: affection, sincere love and delicate emotions. Perfect for anniversaries.
  • White hydrangea: purity, gratitude and new beginnings. Very popular for weddings.
  • Purple hydrangea: abundance and a touch of sophistication; it conveys admiration.

A curiosity: a hydrangea's colour depends on the soil's acidity, so the same plant can produce blue or pink flowers depending on where it grows.

How to combine hydrangeas in a bouquet

The hydrangea is generous: it adds volume and fills a bouquet like few flowers do. These are the combinations that work best:

  • With roses and peonies: the romantic bouquet par excellence, full of body and softness.
  • With lisianthus and eucalyptus: a natural, sophisticated look that's very on trend.
  • With wildflowers and greenery: for a countryside or boho style.
  • On their own, as a single-flower bouquet: several hydrangeas in the same tone create a minimalist, elegant piece.

At Floristería Mallorca we make hydrangea bouquets to your taste: you choose the colour and quantity, and we prepare them by hand with fresh flowers.

Caring for cut hydrangeas (and how to revive them)

The hydrangea is spectacular, but also sensitive to a lack of water. The good news: with a couple of steps it lasts a long time and, if it wilts, it almost always recovers. Here are the key care tips:

  • Cut the stems at an angle (1-2 cm) under water before placing them in the vase, to improve absorption.
  • Plenty of fresh water: hydrangeas drink a lot. Fill the vase well and change the water every 2 days.
  • Remove submerged leaves so the water doesn't rot.
  • Away from direct sun and heat sources; they prefer cool spots.
  • Mist them daily: hydrangeas absorb moisture through their petals too.

The florist's trick to revive them: if it wilts, submerge the whole flower head (not just the stem) in cold water for 30-60 minutes. The hydrangea rehydrates through the bloom and usually “comes back to life”. It works almost every time.

Hydrangeas for weddings & events in Mallorca

The hydrangea is one of the star flowers of weddings, and it's no coincidence: it adds volume, is cost-effective for its size and pairs with any style, from classic to boho. It's used in bridal bouquets, centrepieces, arches and ceremony décor.

It's also a summer seasonal flower, just when most weddings take place on the island. If you're getting married here, take a look at our guide to wedding trends in Mallorca and our weddings & events section.

Occasions to give hydrangeas

Thanks to their meaning of gratitude and affection, hydrangeas suit many moments:

  • Saying thank you to someone special.
  • Anniversaries and couple celebrations.
  • Birthdays with a bouquet full of colour.
  • A “thinking of you” for no reason, which always brightens the day.

And if you want it to last even longer, we also work with preserved hydrangeas, which keep their beauty for months.

Frequently asked questions

What does giving hydrangeas mean?

The hydrangea symbolises gratitude, abundance and sincere feelings. By colour: blue conveys trust and harmony; pink, affection; white, purity; and purple, admiration and sophistication.

How do you revive a wilted hydrangea?

Submerge the whole flower head (not just the stem) in cold water for 30-60 minutes. The hydrangea rehydrates through its petals and usually recovers completely.

How long do hydrangeas last in a vase?

With good care, between 5 and 10 days. The key is plenty of fresh water, changing it every 2 days, cutting the stems at an angle and misting the flowers daily.

Which flowers go well with hydrangeas?

They look ideal with roses, peonies, lisianthus and eucalyptus for a romantic, natural bouquet. They also shine on their own, as a single-flower bouquet in the same tone.

Why do hydrangeas change colour?

The colour depends on the soil's acidity: acidic soils tend towards blue and alkaline soils towards pink. The same variety can produce different-coloured flowers depending on where it grows.

Do you deliver hydrangea bouquets in Mallorca?

Yes. We deliver hydrangea bouquets and arrangements across Palma and the whole island. You can choose colour and quantity, and we prepare them by hand with fresh flowers.
