“Silvia” Plant Arrangement with Orchid

The centrepiece is a phalaenopsis orchid with two flowering stems. Around it sit a kalanchoe in bloom, a parlour palm (Chamaedorea metallica) and a few decorative foliage plants filling the front of the ceramic pot. Not always. In the photo the orchid is white and the kalanchoe pale pink, but the shades come down to whichever plants are available at the time, so they can change. What we try to keep is the idea itself: a two-stemmed orchid, a kalanchoe and a palm together in ceramic, in one size.

Choose a spot with plenty of daylight where the sun does not hit it directly, such as near a window with a light curtain. Water in moderation: let the soil dry out a little before watering again, and check that the base of the pot never holds standing water, as soggy roots soon suffer. It is an indoor arrangement and would not be happy out on a terrace.

Nothing to worry about: flowering comes to an end and the plant has a rest. Carry on with the usual light and watering and, in time, the orchid may bloom again; there is no fixed date, as each plant follows its own rhythm. Meanwhile the kalanchoe and the palm keep the pot looking lively. Pinch off faded kalanchoe flowers so it stays neat.

Yes, very much so. None of the plants in “Silvia” is fussy: good light, a little water when the soil starts to dry out, and that is about it. The most common mistake is overwatering, so if in doubt, wait another day. That is exactly why it makes such an easy gift.
