Sunflower and gerbera bouquet: a burst of sunshine, made in Palma and delivered anywhere in Mallorca today

Sunflowers and gerberas in equal numbers, with filler flowers and mixed greenery: our sunflower and gerbera bouquet comes in four sizes, from 5 of each in the small to 20 of each in the XXL.

Ekaterina ties it by hand at our workshop, using flowers she picked out that morning, and we drive it to the door ourselves, whether that's in Palma or the farthest village on the island; order in good time and it arrives today. The photos show the small size, and the bouquet is a real one: sunflowers, yellow gerberas, tiny chamomile daisies and lilac limonium among green leaves, wrapped in pale pink paper. The gerberas and filler change colour with what comes in each day; the sunflowers keep their familiar yellow.

What's in the sunflower and gerbera bouquet

Sunflowers
Yellow petals round a dark centre you can spot from across the room: they give the bouquet its character.

Gerberas
As many as there are sunflowers, with their round, flat flower heads; the colour depends on the day (yellow in the photo).

Filler and greenery
Little flowers and leaves to space out the big heads; in the photo, chamomile and lilac limonium.

When to give it

Birthday
For someone who loves colour: a bouquet you notice from the front door.

Good news or a lift
An exam passed, a new job or a rough patch finally over: something cheerful waiting at home.

Saying thank you
For the colleague who covered for you, the friend who lent you her car or the teacher on the last day of term.

Welcome or new home
For someone who has just moved into a new flat or settled on the island: the first full vase in their new place.

How to care for sunflowers and gerberas

  1. Straight away: take off the paper, recut the stems at an angle with a sharp knife and strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline; sunflower leaves are large and cloud the water quickly.
  2. Shallow water, changed often: gerberas have soft stems and prefer shallow water, while sunflowers are thirsty. The answer is a few centimetres of water, topped up daily and changed every other day.
  3. A weighty vase: sunflower heads are heavy, so pick a stable vase that isn't too wide at the neck. Sunny windowsills, radiators and fruit bowls are best avoided.

FAQ about the sunflower and gerbera bouquet

How many flowers are there in each size?

The small has 5 sunflowers and 5 gerberas; the medium, 10 of each; the large, 15 of each; and the XXL, 20 of each. Every size also gets filler flowers and mixed greenery, which give the big flower heads a bit of breathing space. The bouquet in the photos is the small one, and that day the filler was chamomile daisies and lilac limonium.

Will the gerberas be yellow, like in the photo?

We can't promise that. Gerberas and filler flowers come from whatever reaches our workshop each morning, and the shades on offer aren't always the same, so depending on availability you may get a different gerbera colour or different filler. What stays fixed is what you choose: sunflowers and gerberas, in the numbers set by the size. The sunflowers, of course, are always yellow, because that's simply what they are. The paper can change too; in the photo it is pale pink.

Which size should I go for?

Use the photo as a guide: that's the small one, held in one hand, and it sits happily on an office desk or in a hotel room. The medium has twice the flowers and needs a proper vase. The large and the XXL are for when you want the bouquet to be the first thing anyone sees; with 40 flowers between sunflowers and gerberas, the XXL is the showiest of the four.

Do you do sunflowers on their own, or with roses?

Yes, both. If you'd like nothing but sunflowers, have a look at our sunflower bouquet. And for red against yellow, there is our rose and sunflower bouquet, with red roses and sunflowers, from 5 + 5 up to 15 + 15 flowers.

Do sunflowers keep following the sun once they're in a vase?

No. Tracking the sun is something the young plant does while it is still growing in the field; once the flower opens, the head settles facing east and stops moving. Cut and indoors, a sunflower won't turn any more, although it may lean slightly towards the window. If you want the bouquet to stay upright, give the vase a half-turn now and then.

Can it be delivered today?

Usually, yes, as long as the order comes in on time. As a rough guide, orders placed before 9:00 tend to go out on the morning run, and those placed before 13:00 on the afternoon one. We deliver on weekdays between 10:00 and 14:00 and again between 16:00 and 20:00; on Saturday it's 10:00 to 14:00, and Sunday is a day off for deliveries. Pick the day and delivery window when you pay. If it suits you better, collect it from our shop in Coll d'en Rabassa, close to the airport. Questions? Phone or message +34 658 838 056, which also works on WhatsApp.

Why do gerberas sometimes bend?

Because they carry a large flower on a long, soft stem. If they run short of water, or stand too long with their stems deep in it, the neck gives way. To prevent it, trim the stems at an angle, keep the water shallow and change it often. And if one flops over completely, cut the stem short and pop it in a small glass: it will still look lovely.

Who are you?

Behind the name is a family-run florist with a shop and workshop at C/ Cardenal Rossell 73, Coll d'en Rabassa (Palma), a stone's throw from the airport. “Floristería Mallorca” is our own brand, registered with the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM), so when you see that name, you know exactly who you are dealing with. It is Ekaterina who chooses each morning's flowers and works out how every bouquet should look.
